Clay and Concrete Tile Roof Repairs for Toronto Homes

Clay and concrete tiles are heavy, long-lasting roof coverings, and they shed water well when every tile sits in its place. Problems start when a tile cracks, a fixing fails or the mortar along a ridge or hip loosens. Toronto Roofing & Masonry replaces damaged tiles, refixes those that have slipped and secures the ridge and hip details so the roof keeps water out.

Toronto winters are hard on tiles. Water that soaks into a hairline crack freezes and widens it, and ice building up at the eaves can push tiles out of line. Because tiles overlap, the underlayment beneath is the second layer of protection, so we check it wherever tiles have moved. We explain the repair options that suit your roof before any work goes ahead.

What's included

Tile Roof Repairs and Details We Handle

What the work covers, explained to you before anything starts.

  • Replacing cracked, chipped or broken clay and concrete tiles with tiles of a matching profile where they can be sourced.
  • Refixing slipped tiles so each one overlaps correctly and sheds water onto the tile below.
  • Rebedding or refixing loose ridge and hip tiles along the top and edges of the roof.
  • Checking and repairing the underlayment beneath tiles that have moved or let water through.
  • Renewing flashings where the tiled roof meets walls, chimneys and dormers.
  • Clearing broken tile fragments from valleys and eavestroughs so water can drain away freely.

Why choose us

Why Homeowners Choose Us for Tile Roof Repairs

The Cause Found First

A cracked tile is often a symptom, so we check whether a fixing, the underlayment or a ridge detail is behind it before proposing a repair.

Tiles Matched by Profile

Clay and concrete tiles come in many shapes, and we look for replacements that interlock with your existing tiles rather than forcing a poor fit.

Ridges and Hips Secured

Loose ridge tiles are among the first to move in high winds, so we treat the ridge and hip lines as part of the repair rather than an afterthought.

Roof Structure Considered

Tile is a heavy covering, and if the boards or framing beneath show signs of strain, we tell you before any tiles are relaid.

Factors in the Cost of Tile Roof Repairs

The cost of a tile roof repair depends on what we find, including:

  • The number of tiles that are cracked, slipped or missing
  • Whether matching clay or concrete tiles can be sourced
  • The length of ridge and hip that needs refixing
  • The condition of the underlayment beneath the tiles
  • Roof height, pitch and access

The work

How a Tile Roof Repair Is Carried Out

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Close Inspection

We check the tiles, ridge and hip lines, flashings and, where tiles have moved, the underlayment beneath them.

  2. Repair Plan and Estimate

You receive a clear explanation of what needs doing and an estimate, so you can decide before any work is scheduled.

  3. Tile and Ridge Repairs

Damaged tiles are lifted out and replaced, slipped tiles are refixed and loose ridge or hip tiles are secured.

  4. Final Review with You

We remove broken tiles and debris, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Common Questions About Tile Roofs in Toronto

What is the difference between clay and concrete roof tiles?

Clay tiles are made from fired clay and tend to hold their colour well. Concrete tiles are made from a sand and cement mix, are usually heavier, and their surface colour can fade over time. Both shed water well when they are fixed correctly.

Can I replace just a few tiles rather than the whole roof?

In most cases, yes. Individual cracked or slipped tiles can be replaced on their own. The main limit is finding tiles with a profile that interlocks with yours, which we check before work begins.

Why are tiles cracking on my roof?

Common causes include water freezing in small cracks during freeze-thaw cycles, impact from branches or falling debris, and people stepping on tiles that are not designed to take weight. A failed fixing can also let a tile rattle and crack.

Is the underlayment under my tiles important?

Yes. Tiles shed most of the water, but wind-driven rain and melting snow can get past them. The underlayment beneath is the layer that stops that water reaching the roof boards and the house below.

Why are my ridge tiles coming loose?

Ridge and hip tiles sit on the most exposed part of the roof. Over time the mortar or fixings holding them can weaken, and wind, frost and movement in the roof can loosen them further.
