Roof Work for Toronto Houses, Pitched and Flat

A Toronto roof spends the winter under snow load and freeze-thaw cycles, then faces spring melt and summer storms. Many houses in the city also carry older roofs, brick chimneys and rear additions with flat sections. Toronto Roofing & Masonry looks after the whole roof, from a single leak or lifted shingle to a complete replacement, and we explain what we find before we propose any work.

Our roofing work covers asphalt shingles, natural slate, clay and concrete tile, and the membranes used on flat and low-slope roofs. We also repair masonry chimneys, replace siding and renew soffit, fascia and eavestroughs, because water that gets past any one of these ends up inside your home. Use the pages below to read about each service, then contact us by phone, email or the enquiry form to arrange an estimate.

Why choose us

How We Approach Roofing Work in Toronto

The Cause Found Before the Fix

We trace a leak or a worn area back to its source, so the work we propose deals with the problem rather than the stain on your ceiling.

Repair or Replace, Explained

When a roof is near the end of its life, we set out what a repair would achieve against a replacement, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Details Suited to Toronto Winters

Flashing, ice and water protection at eaves and valleys, and attic ventilation all matter here, because ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles find any weak point.

Roof, Walls and Ground Under One Contractor

We also carry out foundation and masonry work, so if roof water is causing trouble at ground level, you can deal with both through the same contractor.

What Shapes the Cost of Roofing Work

Every roof is different, and the estimate we give you depends on a few main factors:

  • The type of roof and the material it is covered in
  • The size and pitch of the roof, and how easy it is to reach
  • Whether the work is a repair, a recover or a full replacement
  • The condition of the roof deck, flashings and chimney
  • Any siding, soffit, fascia or eavestrough work added to the job

How a Roofing Job Runs from Estimate to Completion

The main stages of the job, from the first look to the final check.

  1. Roof Assessment

We look at the roof covering, flashings, chimney and roof edge, and check the attic where we can, to understand what is happening and why.

  2. Options and Estimate

We explain the options that suit your home and give you an estimate to consider and approve.

  3. Roof Work Carried Out

The agreed work is carried out to the scope in your estimate, and anything unexpected found along the way is discussed with you first.

  4. Final Review

We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Roofing Questions from Toronto Homeowners

How do I know if my roof needs repair or replacement?

Isolated problems such as a few missing shingles, a leak at one flashing or a damaged section usually point to a repair. Widespread curling or granule loss, repeated leaks in different places or a soft roof deck suggest the roof is reaching the end of its life. We assess the roof and explain which option makes sense for yours.

Why do ice dams form on Toronto roofs?

Heat escaping from the house warms the upper roof and melts snow, and the water refreezes when it reaches the colder eaves. The ridge of ice holds back more meltwater, which can work its way under shingles. Good attic insulation and ventilation reduce the problem, and ice and water protection at the eaves helps keep water out.

Can a roof be repaired in winter?

Many repairs can be carried out in cold weather, although some materials, such as shingle sealant strips and certain membranes, bond best in milder temperatures. Snow and ice also need to be cleared safely first. We tell you what can be done now and what is better left until conditions improve.

Which roofing material is right for my house?

It depends on the pitch of the roof, the style and age of the house and what is on it now. Asphalt shingles suit most pitched roofs, slate and tile are found on some older Toronto homes, and flat sections need a membrane. We explain the choices that make sense for your house.

Does a roof leak always start where the ceiling stain is?

Not usually. Water often enters at a flashing, a chimney, a vent or a damaged shingle and then runs along the deck or rafters before it drips through. That is why we trace the leak back to its entry point before deciding what to repair.
